Kalahari Meerkat Project

The Kalahari Meerkat Project is a long term field project investigating the ecological causes and evolutionary consequences of cooperative breeding in meerkats (Suricata suricatta). The study is based in the South African Kalahari close to the Botswana border. We work with 13 groups of meerkats fully habituated to close observation by field researchers. Daily work involves the collection of quantitative data on behaviour, reproduction, growth and feeding ecology which provides volunteers with invaluable expertise in fieldwork and project design.

Volunteers are paid a monthly allowance to cover their food and (at the end of their stay) a contribution to their travel costs. Since it takes several weeks to acquire the necessary field skills, we are only interested in volunteers wishing to stay for at least 12 months.
