Hwange Lion Research

An investigation into the population dynamics of the African lion (Panthera leo) of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

In our study of an exploited lion population, in and adjacent to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, we are measuring the population parameters of the Hwange lions. A large element of the project is to provide opportunities for discourse between the different stake-holders (such as safari operators and guides, professional hunting guides and the Zimbabwean National Parks and Wildlife Authority) involved in lion management and sustainable use.

The Hwange lion project has established a partnership with the Zimbabwean Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (PWLAZ). The work is sponsored by a Darwin Initiative Award for Biodiversity, and several supplementary donations. Please see our sponsors link for full details.

The project has been running since late 1999 and is currently expected to run until at least 2007.
