Foreword By Chris Newman & Christina Buesching
Monitoring mammal populations is an important task in our ever-changing environment. However, it is also very labour intensive work with many hours of watching and searching for field signs. The help of volunteers can make a real difference in this context.
Our mammal monitoring project in Wytham Woods started in April 2000 as part of a national initiative. We aim to collect data on all mammal populations in the Woods, while simultaneously also testing and evaluating methods of training volunteers and using data collected by non-professionals.
Over the years our project benefited greatly from the efforts of the volunteers who have put in a lot of work and collected valuable and reliable data.
Our thanks go to the Earthwatch Institute Europe and the Mammals Trust UK for supporting the project and recruiting volunteers on our behalf.
