The Mongolia Carnivore Project is a collaborative effort between the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Mongolian Conservation Cooperative, and Denver Zoological Foundation. Our research team consists of the following:

Core members:


Tserendorj Munkhzul - Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Mammalogy. Ms. Munkhzul earned a Masters degree based on her research into the behavioural ecology of Mongolian pika (Ochotona pallasi). She is a small mammal specialist and serves as the project's manager in Mongolia. Photo © James D. Murdoch

Otgonbayar - Ikh Nartiin Chuluun Nature Reserve. Mr. Otgonbayar serves as Park Ranger for the reserve and possesses a detailed knowledge of the region's flora and fauna. He assists in all data collection efforts including radio tracking, trapping, and small mammal surveys. Photo © James D. Murdoch

Richard Reading, Ph.D - Denver Zoological Foundation, Director of Conservation Biology. Dr. Reading is a wildlife biologist that has worked on species and ecosystem level conservation issues in Mongolia for over 15 years. He has launched several major research initiatives that focus on Argali sheep, ibex, and Bactrian camels. Photo © James D. Murdoch

Claudio Sillero-Zubiri, DPhil. - Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, University of Oxford. Dr. Sillero oversees all scientific aspects of the project and serves as J. Murdoch's doctoral supervisor at the University of Oxford. Dr. Sillero has extensive experience studying the conservation of threatened and endangered species, including Ethiopian wolves, African wild dogs, and most recently Andean cats in South America.

David Kenny, DVM - Denver Zoological Foundation. Dr. Kenny serves as senior veterinarian at the Denver Zoo and oversees all veterinary aspects of the project, including trapping and radio collaring efforts. Photo © James D. Murdoch

T. Galbaatar, D.Sc. - Former Vice President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and current Mongolian ambassador to Germany.

B. Lhagvasuren, Ph.D. - Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Biology. Dr. Lhagvasuren is an antelope specialist and directs the Institute's Mammalogy Laboratory.

Anthony DeNicola, Ph.D. - White Buffalo, Inc. Dr. DeNicola is a wildlife capture specialist and oversees the design and implementation of trapping efforts.
