The Mongolia Carnivore Project
is based in the Ikh Nartiin Chuluun Nature Reserve located in the Dalangargal
soum (county) of the Dornogov aimag (province), Mongolia (N45.723 E108.645).
The reserve covers approximately 44,000 km2 and is situated at an ecotone
between grassland steppe and semi-desert steppe environments. The flora
and fauna of the reserve are representative of the more semi-desert
regions of central Asia and consist of a mix of grassland and desert
species. Corsac foxes, red foxes, Pallas' cats, and Eurasian badgers
all live in the reserve and surrounding areas along with other carnivore
species, such as steppe wildcat, and grey wolf. Our research camp is
located in the reserve and jointly managed by the Denver Zoological
Foundation and Mongolian Academy of Sciences. Other researchers at the
camp study the ecology, behaviour, and conservation of Argali sheep
and Asiatic ibex.
