In the past year, David Macdonald has received medals of commendation from both the American and British Mammal Societies. He has just returned from the USA, where he received the American Society of Mammalogists’ prestigious Merriam Award. The annual award, which was launched in 1976, honours individuals for outstanding research contributions to the science of Mammology. The recipient is invited to address the Society in a plenary session at its annual meeting.
This award is in addition to the British Mammal Society Award David was presented in April for his unparalleled services to Mammalogy. For over 50 years, The British Mammal Society has worked to protect British mammals, to halt the decline of threatened species and to offer advice on all issues affecting British Mammals. It has been awarding the medal to a leading Mammologist each year since 1973 and David joins a prestigious list of the Medal's recipients that includes Sir David Attenborough, who was presented with the medal in 2004.
