Canid Specialist Group
Based at Tubney House with WildCRU, the CSG is the world's chief body of scientific and practical expertise on the status and conservation of all canid species.

Saving Endangered Species

A lengthening list of endangered species is the consequence of the accelerating loss of natural habitats around the world. Safeguarding habitats is fundamental to conservation, but within that ultimate goal there is a focused challenge to solve the particular problems faced by individual species.

For example, in East Africa, Grevy's zebra are hunted for their skins and face competition from domestic stock. We are gathering much needed data on their distribution to underpin a conservation plan.

In Eastern Europe our work on the once numerous European mink reveals they face extinction through competition from introduced American mink - we have established an island refuge in the Baltic where captive-bred specimens are now breeding in the wild.
