I obtained my B.Sc. degree in Biology from the University of Manchester, during which time I spent two field seasons in Kenya, researching elephant damage to riparian tree species and working with the Kenya Wildlife Service’s Rhino Management Group. On completion of my degree, I worked for the University of Cambridge Kalahari Meerkat Project, where I met my wife Anne-Marie Stewart. Afterward we moved to Indonesia to work for The Nature Conservancy in Borneo, designing rapid survey techniques for looking at mammal diversity and density to aid FSC forestry certification processes. We also investigated the effects of hunting on forest mammals in Borneo, with a focus on Borneo’s felids. In 2007 we joined the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia, working closely with Namibian farmers to reduce human-carnivore conflict. Our main aims were to improve livestock management techniques so that carnivores were no longer a problem. We also worked intensively reintroducing captive-raised cheetahs into historical range. We joined WildCRU’s Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme in 2009. I am the Technical Coordinator of EWCP, overseeing the logistics and coordinating our monitoring and vaccination activities. We live in the Bale Mountains of southern Ethiopia.
