Dr Courtney Hughes

Courtney is the Senior Land and Biodiversity Specialist with Alberta Environment and Parks, in northwestern Canada. In addition to working on various projects related to landscape planning, policy development, and applied biological and social science research, Courtney has extensive experience in community-based and collaborative conservation efforts, working locally and internationally with not-for-profit organizations, community groups, governments, industry, and Indigenous Peoples on projects ranging from human-wildlife conflict and coexistence, to recreational development, citizen science and environmental education.
In addition to being a visiting tutor once a year for the Recanati-Kaplan Centre’s Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice since 2011, Courtney has also worked as a Science Teacher, Director of a children’s science program, Natural Resource Policy Analyst, and Instructor at the University of Alberta.
Courtney holds a PhD from the University of Alberta, having studied the social context of grizzly bear recovery in Alberta, Canada, and enjoys collaborating with WildCRU’s Diploma students and alumni, WildCRU colleagues, other scholars, and conservation practitioners in various projects around the world.
