As part of this long-running programme, WildCRU researcher Sophie Lund Rasmussen co-authored the IUCN Red List European hedgehog update, published in October 2024. The species was moved from ‘Least Concern’ to ‘Near Threatened’ due to ongoing population declines and habitat loss.
This status change led to a session at the European Parliament addressing how the EU and its member states can help stop this decline. Sophie was a keynote speaker at this event and laid the groundwork for the collaborative development of an EU range- wide Conservation Strategy for the European hedgehog.
