The spread of non-native species can pose significant threats to biodiversity through predation, competition for resources, hybridisation and disease transmission.
In June 2025, EU Member States voted for adding 26 new species to the list of species of Union concern under the EU Invasive Alien Species Regulations (Regulation (EU) 1143/2014), including the American mink. The risk assessment that supported listing of the American mink was led by Lauren Harrington, and included reference to much of WildCRU’s research over the last three decades on the biology and behaviour of the species and its impacts on native wildlife. A two year transitional period was agreed, and the mink will be listed in September 2027.
