The Sebungwe region forms a vital ecological link between Hwange-Chobe and the lower Zambezi conservation areas. Characterised by mountainous terrain it is home to diverse wildlife but is highly threatened by human disturbances.
Regular monitoring of vulnerable species populations is vital for effective conservation management in the region. Building on baseline camera trap surveys conducted in 2017 and 2018, the WildCRU team repeated the exercise in 2024, to generate new population density estimates for lions, leopards, and spotted hyaenas and to assess changes over time. Data analysis, completed in 2025, also showed evidence of widespread snaring for bushmeat and increased livestock encroachment.
A detailed report of the findings was produced and shared with stakeholders, along with recommendations to address the threats identified.
