Wildlife documentaries are increasingly used as tools for conservation communication, yet their impacts are rarely evaluated with scientific rigour.
This project assessed the real-world impact of Tigre Gente (2023), a documentary on illegal jaguar trafficking between Bolivia and China. The film follows a Bolivian park ranger and a Hong Kong investigative journalist on opposite sides of the trade chain. The evaluation drew on multiple sources including post-screening surveys, stakeholder interviews, media monitoring, legal and political documents, and community workshop outputs.
In terms of impacts, most notably, attendance at a film premiere prompted a representative of Nacional Seguros to launch a life insurance initiative for Bolivian park rangers. The film also contributed to shaping national discourse around ranger welfare, and supported the passing of a new national jaguar law in Bolivia.
