Dr Henry Anderson-Elliott
Admin Staff
I am the Programme Assistant for the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme, having joined in August 2024. My role is to provide any operational, administrative, and media support to the EWCP.
I studied for my BA (Hons), MPhil, and PhD at the University of Cambridge, in the Department of Geography and the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) respectively. Throughout these studies, I was interested in the relationships between humans and large carnivores – from the production of knowledge for policy and decision-making, to deep-rooted cultural attitudes and ideas.
My Masters research examined the conservation of brown bears in Scandinavia, with a specific focus on the role of the fieldwork methods of brown bear scientists in how bears are understood. My PhD then explored the different human relationships with polar bears in Svalbard. It focused on the life of an individual bear (known as Misha, Frost, or N23992) whose encounters with multiple human stakeholders (and massive public audiences), came to shape not only her own existence, but those of her cubs, and more broadly the attitudes towards her entire species.
I was formerly an ESRC Grand Union Research Fellow in the School of Geography and the Environment, as well as a Visiting Fellow at The Arctic Institute. I am also the co-founder of the Digital Ecologies research group.
I have previously worked in film and media. I was a Researcher and Specialist Researcher for Plimsoll Productions on an Emmy-nominated natural history documentary series for National Geographic and Disney+. This project involved work on location, filming polar bear denning in the Canadian Arctic. I am also a keen writer and have written articles for various publications.
I recently spent the best part of a year as a baker, pursuing my other passion for breads!
