Why do researchers publish papers?

Research does not end when the fieldwork is finished, the analysis is complete, or the last graph is drawn. Research only becomes part of a collective endeavour when it is documented, shared, and entered into the scientific record.
Knowledge is not just something we produce for ourselves or our immediate team. It becomes fully useful only when others can find it, assess it, question it, and build on it. Research should be part of a shared public record that allows science to accumulate over time.
The practical case for publishing research
Science is cumulative – very few studies begin from scratch. Most build on what came before, whether that is previous theory, earlier data, or methods developed by other researchers. Each study adds another stone to a structure that is already being built. That is why people sometimes say that science is about “standing on the shoulders of giants”. The phrase simply means that new discoveries are made possible by the careful work of those who came before.
But that only works if the earlier work is properly recorded. If findings are never written up, they cannot be checked, compared, reused, or challenged. Documentation is not an administrative afterthought, it is a core part of research itself.
Publishing research is therefore part of doing research well. A paper is not just an end product. It is a durable record. It preserves the methods used, the results found, the limitations encountered, and the questions that remain unanswered. That matters for reproducibility, because other researchers need to know what was done. It matters for continuity, because future work often depends on tracing how a question developed. And it matters for efficiency, because a clearly documented study can save others from repeating mistakes or reinventing the wheel.
This is also why null results matter. If an intervention does not work, or if a hypothesis is not supported, that is still useful information. Without that part of the record, the literature becomes distorted. Positive findings appear more common than they really are, and researchers may waste time pursuing dead ends that have already been explored. Good scholarship includes documenting what did not happen, not only what did.
So, in a very practical sense, research documentation is an act of stewardship. It is a way of preserving knowledge so that others can learn from it, challenge it, and extend it.

The ethical case for publishing research
There is a deeper reason why research should be documented and shared: it is the ethical thing to do. Access to knowledge is a human right, reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which frame scientific progress as something that should be available and accessible to all, especially vulnerable and marginalised groups.
That principle sits uneasily with a publishing system that keeps knowledge behind paywalls or requires authors to pay substantial fees to make their work visible. The current model often excludes both readers and authors. In conservation science, for example, most journals still fail to meet the full Fair Open Access standards, with only a small minority complying with all five principles.
Open access matters because much of this research is also publicly funded, and because access to research shapes who can use knowledge and who cannot. Some researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students, and organisations can read the work easily; others cannot. The result is a system in which participation in science is unevenly distributed, and the ability to benefit from knowledge often depends on institutional privilege rather than intellectual need.
The COVID-19 pandemic made this especially clear. When major publishers temporarily lifted paywalls for COVID-related research, they effectively acknowledged that barriers to access can slow progress and reduce the social value of science. It was a powerful reminder that both paywalls and author-facing open access fees can harm society by restricting the circulation of knowledge.
For researchers, publishing is not only about visibility or career progression. It is about responsibility. It is about making sure that what has been discovered is properly recorded, preserved, and shared. It is about contributing to a collective record that future researchers can rely on, and about asking whether the current structures for publishing research are consistent with the values science ought to serve.
